15 World Largest Mosque by Area

Note that determining exactly what should be included when calculating area is a highly subjective assessment, and the figures given anywhere adhere to no common standard while making any ranking list by anyone. But we tried to bring some uniformity and standard in our list. During calculating areas of the mosques we only considered those areas which are
  • used as for prayer area, while determining, area vs capacity analysis is observed.
  • or officially a part of mosque including all facilities.
  • or covered area of a building.
Where things are much complicated during determining or the mosque which is in serious matter of debate, footnotes are established.

​[a] Sabancı Merkez Camii is built on a total of 52,600 square meter of land and has a closed area of 6,600 square meters. 
[b] Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab Mosque total area allocated for the project is about 175,164 sq m, and the total area covered 27,644 sq m, and the percentage of area covered 15.8% of the project area. 
[c] The complex covers 1,89,705 sq.metres, while the covered area of the prayer hall encompasses 4815.759 sq.metres. According to Ministry of Tourism Pakistan.
[d] Grand Mosque of Kuwait area spans 45,000 square metres (480,000 sq ft), out of which the building itself covers 20,000 square metres (220,000 sq ft). 
[e] Imam Reza Shrine itself covers an area of 267,079m² while the seven courtyards which surround it cover an area of 331,578m²- totaling 598,657 m².   
[f] Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque includes the fully consolidated areas and landscaping, covering 416,000 square metres. The Mosque complex is covering 40,000 square metres.
